Glossary of Video Terms
- Pre-Production – The work done on a product, especially a film or broadcast program before full-scale production begins. Elements of video production such as the script, casting, location scouting, equipment and crew, and the shot list all happen during pre-production. Pre-pro is the planning stage.
- Production/Filming – Production is the actual filming of the video. This can happen virtually or on location. Production includes consideration for resources like crew, equipment, set, talent (actors) and all necessary props out to the location and capture all the footage necessary. If you’re adding elements such as motion graphics, animation or voice-overs in your video, the material will be produced in the production stage. Considerations include: number of crew and time, lighting kits, cameras/angles, rigs and gear, lodging, meals and many other aspects that ensure efficient and complete production.
- Post Production – Often referred to as ‘post’. The organizing, cutting, coloring and editing the footage captured in production. Post is where all the footage is constructed and the final touches, the elements that really make the video shine, are added to the final product. For example: animated titles as needed, editing, compilation of media (video, photo, motion graphics, etc.), color, audio, revisions as needed (flexible).
- Graphic Design – The process of visual communication through the use of typography, photography, iconography and illustration. In video, this is part of the production process and could include static artwork, motion graphics, text/titles and more.
- Music Licensing – Legal permission to use an artist’s work in a variety of ways. There are several types of licenses with various purposes. Because copyrighted material needs written permission from the author to be used, people seeking to use the work must get a music license. Typically, Exclamation will purchase and maintain the license for videos we produce. If a client prefers to administer licensing, our team may ask for documentation to ensure it’s properly authorized for use.
